Want to learn more about group therapy and how it could benefit you? We've answered some commonly asked questions.
Group therapy is a treatment where a therapist leads a small group of people in shared sessions to help members with similar issues. In many cases, groups can be even more effective than individual therapy because it helps reduce stigma and build solidarity with people who are experiencing something similar.
There are countless types of group therapy, but in general, you can expect to be in the company of other people who share similar struggles. There will be a trained therapist present to guide the conversation and ensure that the group is a safe space for all members to share and learn from each other.
While it may feel awkward to talk about your life in front of strangers at first, over time, groups can promote strong feelings of belonging and acceptance.
According to the American Psychological Association, studies have shown group therapy to be just as effective as individual therapy. In some cases it can be even more effective, because group members are able to practice social skills, experience solidarity, and engage in community in ways that are not possible with individual therapy. Many therapists recommend group therapy as an accompaniment to individual therapy and/or medication.
Group therapy is often more affordable than individual therapy, although prices can vary significantly. from practice to practice.
Con Safos Counseling is proud to provide affordable, accessible group offerings. We are committed to providing sliding scale options to ensure that both group and individual therapy sessions are accessible to our entire community.
